Istanbul

One in a kind - one of the most fascinating cities in Euroasia. Strategically divided by the Bosphorus Strait that reflects a centrally located part of waterway separating Istanbul politically into Asian and European part.

Without a doubt Istanbul is one of the greatest melting pots of traditional eastern history and modern western civilisations, mix of cultures, traditions and different people. Announced as the European Union’s 2010 Capital of Culture.

Stadium

The Atatürk Olympic Stadium, is situated in a district in western part of Istanbul, after it’s construction that began in 1999 and finished in 2002, it’s been announced the biggest football stadium in Turkey that also at the same time stadium that holds the most capacity.

Stadium received its name after the first President of Turkey - Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and it’s construction was part of the Turkey’s 2008 bid process for the Olympic Games that as we all know went to China that year. It’s total cost reached nearly 140 million USD.

  • Capacity: 76,092
  • Opened: 31 July 2002
  • Construction cost: 190 mln USD
  • Architects: Michel Macary & Aymeric Zublena
  • Suites: 36 private-view lodges fully equipped with modern furnishings, private view area, bar and catering facility

Selection process for the Champions League Final venue is based on the internal ratio system created by UEFA.

In this process every stadium gets rated with stars from 1 - 5, taking under consideration capacity, location, previous events hosted and it’s facilities. Technically speaking any stadium witch is rated 4 stars and above is eligible to host Champions League games to include the final. Then the decision is being taken by a simple anonymous draw that picks the next venue for the following years Final - taking under consideration countries that previously hosted the event in the past.

This decision is usually announced during one of the UEFA Executive Committee Meetings 2 years prior to the event itself. The Istanbul win over Lisbon has been announced during the Champions League Final weekend in Kiev 2018.
